What is Prayer?

People Connect. Families Grow. Lives Are Changed.

Have you ever wondered what prayer is all about? Maybe you’re curious about how to start praying or if there’s a right way to do it. We’re about to dive into these questions together and uncover the answers on prayer.

A Guide to Prayer

So, what exactly is prayer? It’s actually a lot less complicated than we tend to make it. Prayer is simply having a heartfelt chat with God. Think of it as a spiritual phone call where we get to share our thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams with a Heavenly Father who cares about everything about us. Whether we’re whispering a quick “thank you” or pouring out our heart, prayer is all about connecting with someone bigger than ourselves.

God doesn’t want us to get caught up on “doing it right” before we decide to have a conversation with Him. He is waiting and listening for us right now

Wait, we can be real with God? He doesn’t get upset when we get really honest and let Him into our thoughts. He just wants to talk with us about everything we’re feeling and going through.

Is There a Right or Wrong Way to Pray?

Great question! The answer is: no, there’s no strict rulebook for prayer. It’s all about what feels right to us. We don’t need fancy words or a specific posture for God to hear us. Whether we’re kneeling, sitting, standing, or lying down, what matters is our sincerity and focus.

The key is to be genuine. It’s our conversation, so we’re free to own it. Think of it as having a conversation with anyone else we’re in a close relationship with.

How Do I Pray?

Wondering how to get started? Don’t worry, it’s easier than we tend to think! Here’s a simple guide to help kick off any prayer practice

1. Find Your Spot: Choose a cozy, quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. It could be your favorite chair, a peaceful park, or even your car.

2. Chill Out: Take a few deep breaths to relax. Close your eyes and get comfy.

3. Ask Away: Share your needs, worries, and hopes. Be honest and open. God is excited about hearing from us, no matter what kind of things we’re bringing to Him.

4. Listen Closely: Remember, prayer is a dialogue. After speaking, take a moment to listen. Play some worship music, read the Bible. God can speak through a song or cause a specific verse to stand out.

5. Wrap It Up: Most people end prayer by saying “Amen.” This word means “so be it.” It’s like putting a seal on the end of the prayer, declaring that the things we’re believing for are going to happen.

Remember, prayer is personal. Just speak from the heart.

Types of Prayer:

1. Adoration: Telling God how incredible He is. In these moments, we aren’t looking for anything from Him. These types of prayers come from being genuinely in awe of who God is, and getting to tell Him how grateful we are that He is who He is.

2. Confession: Owning up to our mistakes and asking for forgiveness. If we’re honest, this isn’t anyone’s favorite thing to do, but it comes with incredible benefits. First, we don’t have to hide sin from God because He already knows what we’ve done and loves us and forgives us anyway. The second benefit is that we get the weight of carrying those mistakes off our shoulders and can find a place where we are relaxed in His presence.

3. Thanksgiving: Saying “thank you” for the good stuff in our lives. It’s as simple as being thankful for a new morning, or a fresh breeze on a hot day, to being gifted a vehicle just at the right time or receiving a positive health diagnosis. When we look around, there are many things we can find to be thankful for.

4. Supplication: Asking for help for yourself or others. This is also commonly phrased as a “prayer request”. We’re going to God and asking for Him to move on our behalf. Knowing that He is always listening means we have confidence to know that He is listening and preparing to help us and others in ways that only He can.

Prayer gives comfort, guidance, and a sense of peace. It’s like having a chat with a wise friend who’s always there for you, no matter the circumstances. While these types of prayers are helpful when we think about what our conversation could sound like, this list does not completely cover the entire scope of prayer.

Does Prayer Really Work?

This is the big question! We’ve probably all encountered people who have no doubts that their prayers are not only heard by God, but that He moves when they pray. So what does prayer really do?

Prayer can calm our minds and help reduce anxiety. We can know without a doubt that we’re having a deeply personal conversation with Someone who not only listens, but will do something about our circumstances. It’s a way for us to relax and trust God to do what only He can do.

The Bible even encourages us to let God know what we’re thinking so that He can help. In the book of Hebrews, it says, “ Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” He’s a gentleman and won’t interfere with our decisions until we invite Him in. However, He is eagerly waiting and ready to come through for us.

In James 4:2, we’re told that we “have not because we ask not.” Sometimes, what we’re waiting and believing for is as simple as one ask away.

While science is still catching up on proving prayer’s effects, personal experiences and the mental benefits suggest it’s worth giving a try.

How Can I Improve My Prayer Life?

Ready to take your prayer life to the next level? Here are some tips to help limit distractions and grow closer in your relationship with God:

1. Make It a Habit: Set a regular time for prayer. Consistency helps us build a lasting habit. Think of it like having a regular date with God.

2. Write It Down: Keep a prayer journal. Jotting down our prayers and reflections can keep us focused by building a reminder of how God has already blessed us.

3. Learn and Grow: Read books about prayer. There’s always more we can learn. Diving into resources allows us to discover new ways to focus our prayers.

4. Get Quiet: Adding quiet times provides moments for God to speak to us. It helps deepen our focus. It also allows for our mind to get out of the way so we can hear when God speaks. He’s always speaking, it’s just easier to hear when we get our own thoughts quiet.

5. Find Community: Finding a group of people we can trust to pray together is essential. Praying with others is encouraging when we know we have others standing in agreement with us. Having others in our circle brings a fresh perspective to our circumstances.

6. Be Real: Authenticity is key. God looks forward to us being honest and open in our prayers. He’s waiting for us to come to Him with it. Prayer is more meaningful when we’re our real, authentic self.

Prayer is a beautiful and personal journey. Whether we’re just starting or looking to deepen our relationship with God, understanding what prayer is, how to pray, and how to enhance our prayer life can enrich our spiritual experience. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to pray. We’re free to be ourselves and speak from the heart.
