The Money Shift Most People Never Make (But Should)

Have you ever been here? You’re driving down the highway and suddenly the check engine light pops on. This can’t be happening. The electric bill is already due this week. You know you just got paid, but somehow the bank balance didn’t notice a change. How is there so much more month than money?

Even with a plan penned down to the penny, it’s like things still don’t seem to flow. We feel the weight of trying to make everything stretch and deep down wonder if there’s a better way to live than always bracing for the next financial crisis.

Maybe what we’re missing isn’t more money, but a different starting point. And the surprising thing? God actually gave us that starting point, one that’s been changing people’s lives for thousands of years.

The Starting Point That Makes Life Flow Again

Here’s the part nobody really talks about: most of us don’t struggle with the idea of giving. It’s the why behind it.

So let’s break it down in a way that makes sense. Giving starts with God instead of squeezing Him in after everything else has been taken care of (if there’s anything left over at all). True, He doesn’t need the money, but if we’re honest with ourselves, we need the reminder that we’re not our own source.

When we get paid, what’s our first thought? The bills? The debt? The groceries? (Our Amazon wishlist?)

Well, the tithe interrupts that cycle. Before everything else tries to stake a claim on our peace, we decide to put God first. The word “tithe” means tenth, so whatever we were just paid… we return 10% of that income back to Him.

The incredible part is this shift changes everything.

Why This Principle Still Matters Today

Malachi 3:10 is one of the boldest verses in Scripture for a reason:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… Test Me in this… and see if I won’t open the floodgates of heaven.”

Initially, it can sound like God’s trying to get something from us, but really He wants us to tithe because it unlocks something within us. Something that can never grow while we’re gripping our money with both hands.

The tithe is a protective principle. We’re reminded that we’re not the ones carrying the full weight of our provision. He said to test Him and trust Him that when we give back the 10%, He’ll make the 90% we have left stretch in ways the math could never make sense of.

So, why does it matter if we give it first? Giving last is leftover faith. Giving first is intentional trust. We’re choosing to give back, not because there’s extra, but because we know we need Him in our finances.

When tithing becomes our rhythm, everything else in our lives starts to take shape. The more we practice this principle, the more we realize God doesn’t tell us to tithe to get money out of our hands, but to get fear of lack out of our hearts.

Why It Feels Risky (and Why It’s Worth It)

It’s funny how something so simple can feel so hard. Giving first sounds easy … until it’s time to actually do it. What is it about releasing a part of what we’ve worked so hard for that can make us hesitate, especially when things already feel tight?

Tithing stretches our trust. It asks us to believe that God can do more with 90% surrendered than we ever could with 100% kept. And that’s not always comfortable.

However, are you ready for this? Comfort isn’t where our faith grows. Every time we choose to put God first, even when it feels risky, we’re making room for Him to move in ways we can’t plan or predict.

In Luke 16:10-12, Jesus says,

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much… and if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?”

Tithing is simply how we practice that kind of trust in real life. He’s able to put more into our hands when we’re trusted to give from what we already have.

What Happens When We Tithe

You might not notice the change overnight, but little by little, you’ll realize that you haven’t felt your stomach drop when you checked the bank account. Even when expenses pop up unexpectedly, you still find yourself giving more freely, because you finally feel like you’re living from a place of abundance instead of lack.

Tithing also creates consistency in your financial life. It builds a steady rhythm where you don’t feel like you’re constantly reacting to surprise moments. You can anticipate God’s provision, not just hope for it. And honestly? That mindset alone can change the way you approach every week.

No, the bills don’t magically disappear, but the constant pressure and mental load starts to lift. We begin to notice more peace where we used to panic. More gratitude where we would only see lack.

Deuteronomy 14:23 shows us how the purpose of the tithe teaches us how to put God first. And honestly, if we can put Him first in our finances, everything else can fall into place.

As we keep growing in this journey of generosity, we can remember that we’re not just giving; we’re inviting God into one of the most personal areas of our life. And He knows exactly how to meet us there.
