Who’s calling the shots in your life—your fear or your faith?
That’s not a trick question. It’s one we all need to ask ourselves, especially when we find ourselves rushing decisions, chasing things we never prayed about, or stuck in that endless cycle of “I knew better, but I did it anyway.”
We’ve all been there.
Maybe you felt a little nudge not to move forward, not to text that person back, not to take that job or swipe that card… but you did it anyway. Why? Because the flesh is loud. But the Spirit? He whispers. And if we’re not listening, we’ll miss it.
Let’s talk about how to hear God clearly, how to slow down, and how to stop being pushed by pressure and start being led by peace.
The Holy Spirit Is Not a “Gut Feeling”
Have you ever gotten a hunch that you should or shouldn’t do something? You can’t explain it. No one else sees the issue. But something inside says, “This isn’t right.”
That’s not intuition. That’s the Holy Spirit.
We call it a “gut check” sometimes. But the Bible calls it an “inner witness.” Romans 8:14 says, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” That verse doesn’t say “those who guess the best” or “those who Google it first.” It says led. Not driven. Not pressured. Led.
And when you’re being led by the Holy Spirit, it feels different. It’s not urgent like fear. It’s not overwhelming like anxiety. It’s steady. Gentle. Clear.
We’ve All Chosen the Red Pinto
A father and son were choosing between two Pintos. One was red, flashy, and decked out with chrome wheels. The other was green, dented, and to be honest, pretty ugly. The choice seemed obvious at first glance, but what looked good wasn’t what was right.
Guess which one looked better?
Guess which one still ran 30 miles later?
Sometimes what looks the best isn’t what’s best. That’s why we don’t follow the crowd; we follow Christ.
And we can’t always trust our eyes, emotions, or timelines. The world will hype you up to make fast decisions. But the Spirit of God will never rush you. Pressure is a sign you need to pause.
Stop Blaming Yourself—God Still Talks to You
Maybe you’ve made some bad calls lately. Maybe you feel like you missed your chance. Or maybe you’re sitting there thinking, “Why would God lead someone like me?”
But listen: God doesn’t speak to you because you’re perfect. He speaks because He’s a good Father.
He didn’t send the Holy Spirit to live in perfect people. He sent Him to guide us, correct us, love us, and get us back on track.
God still speaks even when you mess up. You didn’t get a “discount Holy Spirit” because of your mistakes. You received the real thing. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is living in you.
Yes, even when you cursed last week.
Yes, even when you hit “snooze” on prayer.
Yes, even when you doubted.
It’s Not Always Logical, It’s Spiritual
One of the biggest things that gets in the way of being led by the Spirit is our need to understand everything first.
We want the blueprint, the backup plan, and ten signs before we take a single step. But God isn’t asking us to figure it all out. He’s asking us to trust Him.
There was a time when a church felt called to purchase a property that didn’t make sense on paper. It was too far out, surrounded by warehouses, and came with more problems than perks.
But there was peace in the decision. And today, thousands of lives are being changed there every single week. Not because it looked right, but because the Spirit confirmed it was right.
You don’t have to see the full picture. Just take the next right step.
Prompting Isn’t Pressure
Here’s something to tattoo on your brain: The Holy Spirit leads through prompting, not pressure.
You won’t hear “Buy it now or else.” You’ll hear “Wait.” You won’t feel “Convince them you’re the one.” You’ll feel “Let it go.”
God is not in a rush. He is eternal. So if the timing feels off, maybe it is.
Years ago, a man felt led to sell it, but only after backing out of a deal with the first buyer. Something just did not sit right. Later, a different man showed up. He did not just want the bike. He needed hope.
That one Spirit-led decision opened the door to salvation, a marriage, a business, and eventually, years later, that same motorcycle being gifted back. Obedience always pays off. You may not know what is on the other side of your yes. But God does.
Learn to Listen Before You Move
Jesus did it. Luke 6:12 says before He picked His twelve disciples, He spent the whole night praying.
Not scrolling. Not venting. Praying.
If Jesus needed time to seek direction, we definitely do too.
So, whether you’re trying to make a decision about your career, relationships, finances, or next steps, ask God. Not just once. Keep asking. Keep listening. And when peace shows up? Follow it.
Don’t Confuse Emotion for Revelation
Sometimes what you want is loud. But God? He’s not competing with your noise. He’s waiting for your surrender.
You might want that job because it pays more, but your conscience says Don’t take it. You might want to date that person because they check the boxes, but something in you won’t settle.
That’s not your fear speaking. That’s the Spirit trying to protect you from a storm you can’t yet see.
If it’s God today, it’ll still be God tomorrow. You don’t need to rush. You need to rest and ask, “Who’s leading me?”

Is it your to-do list? Your anxiety? Your flesh? Or the Holy Spirit?
Let’s stop making decisions based on pressure and start building a habit of listening for peace. Not just on the big things, but in the daily little moments.

God’s not trying to hold you back. He’s trying to help you win. But you’ve got to be willing to stop long enough to hear Him speak.
