Overcoming Doubt - Finding Trust
Does this sound familiar? Things are moving along great, you’re excelling, everything is awesome, and then – wham – doubt just suddenly creepts in. What if I can’t do it? What if that project fails? What do I do when that doesn’t work out?
Doubt is so inconvenient. One moment, we’re excited about the future, and the next, we’re left second-guessing everything!
But what if trust is the opposite of doubt?
Now, we’re not talking about trusting in ourselves or our own capabilities. That’s why it’s so easy for the doubt to sneak up on us in the first place.
The antidote to doubt is actually found in trusting God to be the supplier of our resources. It changes everything entirely! Proverbs 3:5 says it best: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding.”
It’s not ignoring life’s challenges. We’re actually inviting God to carry the weight. That’s what we’re going to discover today.
When Doubt Feels Heavy
Sometimes we carry thoughts and worries that keep us spinning our wheels, trying to figure everything out on our own. But what if we didn’t have to?
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Trusting God gives us the confidence to keep moving forward and know He’s got us covered.
Trust is more than just letting go. It provides us with an opportunity to lean into something better. Imagine walking through life without feeling like we need to have everything figured out. That’s the gift trust brings: clarity, peace, and a fresh perspective.
So where do we start?
Finding Trust in Everyday Moments
Choosing to trust, is like finally opening the windows after a long winter. Isaiah 26:3 promises us, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” You see, peace isn’t living in a world without problems. Peace is found when we have confidence that God is working all things for our good, regardless of how things look or what we’re feeling.
Think about what a typical day looks like. Where are the areas we can create space to pause and focus on God’s goodness?
Maybe it’s first thing in the morning before the rest of the house is awake where we can pray and trust God to guide our day. Or maybe there’s space before bed when we can take a few quiet moments to thank God for the good, for the wins, that did happen that day. Even a walk on a lunch break or during our drive time throughout the day can provide moments to build our trust in Him in small, meaningful ways that will lead to bigger transformations in our lives.
The Strength in Letting Go
When all of our focus is on trying to keep everything going well, to keep succeeding, and keep moving forward, it can feel like we’re playing a game of tug-of-war. And losing. But trust invites us to let go of that rope completely … and know we’re still winning!
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. Instead, we’re shifting our focus away from relying on our own skills and talents to keep us afloat. When we stop pulling so hard, trying to force everything to work out, we discover the supernatural strength that comes from leaning on God instead.
Building Deeper Connections Through Trust
Something amazing about letting go of our doubts and trusting God is that the simple mindset shift changes not only how we interact with God, but it changes how we connect with others. When we stop holding on to fear and doubt, we become more open, more loving, and more willing to show grace to others who may be walking through their own doubts. Our relationships really flourish when we’re not expecting disappointment.
Take a moment to think about someone who’s been a source of encouragement. How could God be using that relationship to remind you of His faithfulness? Trust allows us to see His hand working through the people around us. It’s exciting because trust isn’t just for us, but is a way God brings us closer together to strengthen our relationships and build community.
Small Steps to Grow Your Trust
Let’s go a little bit further. Here are some practical steps to move from doubt to trust:
1.Identify Areas of Uncertainty: Start by naming those concerns and areas that dwindle your confidence and give them to God
2. Start Your Day With Prayer: Begin with a simple, honest conversation with God about your hopes and worries. Prayer is simply talking to God like anyone else.
3. Immerse Yourself in Scripture: Verses like Proverbs 3:5 and Romans 8:28 can remind you of God’s promises. Write out a few and post them where you’ll see them every day. You can even make it the background on your phone or computer.
4. Celebrate Small Wins: When we see God working, that’s the perfect time to acknowledge it! Gratitude helps trust grow.
5. Share Your Journey: Talk with someone who can encourage you and help you see God’s work in your life.
Trust Unlocks New Possibilities
As we’ve mentioned, trusting God isn’t about erasing our challenges. Trust enables us to change how we face them. When we trust, we see opportunities where we once saw obstacles. We begin to believe that even in uncertainty, God is creating something beautiful.
What’s one area in your life where you can practice trust today? Maybe it’s a relationship, a decision, or a dream. Whatever it is, know that trusting God opens the door to peace and possibility.
