6 Ways to Strengthen Your Relationship with God
Ever feel like something’s missing? Those moments are the time to begin asking ourselves the right questions to find what we’ve been truly longing for.
In our current society filled with noise and distractions, it’s easy to drift away from God. The beauty is, He cares about having a relationship with us, not about how many boxes we can tick off to follow a routine.
We’re walking through six questions to begin our journey toward a deeper relationship and genuine connection with God.
1. Does Your Calendar Reflect Your Commitment to God?
Take a look at this week’s schedule. It reveals so much about our priorities. We’re able to notice if we’re actively making time for God, or if He’s just squeezed into the leftovers of our day. The reality is, what we prioritize, we’ll make time for. To strengthen our relationship with God, it’s essential to carve out intentional moments where we connect with Him.
Pursuing God with our whole heart means making Him a central part of our day, not just an afterthought. By prioritizing time set aside with Him, our relationship deepens and becomes a more natural part of our daily lives.
Start by looking at this week’s plans. What are some things that can be shifted so that the things God is asking of us can become a more valuable part of our week? Over time, expand that special time by placing it as the center of the daily schedule. With this simple step, our relationship grows to become more and more fulfilling.
2. Do We Trust God with Our Resources?
This may be one of the most challenging questions to wrestle with: Are we willing to trust God with all aspects of our lives, including our finances and resources? Jesus talked a lot about money because it’s often the hardest area of our lives to surrender. It’s easy to say we trust God, but when it comes to our financial decisions, are we willing to let Him lead?
Trusting God with our resources means acknowledging that He is the ultimate provider. Generosity becomes a natural response when we trust that God will meet our needs.
By aligning our finances with God’s purposes, through tithing, giving, and simply managing our money with integrity, we show that our faith is active, even in the areas that are hardest to let go of.
Generosity is one way to demonstrate our trust. When we give with an open heart, we’re acknowledging that God is our provider and that He will take care of our needs.
3. How Has Your Bible Reading Been?
The Bible is more than a religious book. It’s a lifeline to understanding more about God’s heart and His will for our lives. But how often do we really open it up? Bible reading can easily become an afterthought, but it should be one of our primary ways of connecting with God.
We’re not just reading the Bible to gain knowledge, it’s a key to connect with God. In those quiet moments, the words can pop off the pages in ways where we can hear Him speak.
Even if we start with just a few verses a day, the simple act of spending time in God’s Word can transform our perspective. The Bible has a unique way of revealing areas where we need to grow and remind us of God’s promises. Plus, when we approach it with an open heart, we’ll often find that God uses those moments to speak directly into our lives.
4. What Does Your Prayer Life Look Like?
Our relationship with God, like any other meaningful relationship, requires communication. Prayer is more than just presenting our requests to God. It’s about opening our hearts, sharing our struggles, and simply being in His presence.
Set aside time each day for prayer. It doesn’t have to be complicated or hours long. Even a few minutes of genuine, heartfelt conversation with God can make a big difference. And prayer isn’t just about talking. It’s about listening to what He has to say. When we pause long enough to hear what God is saying, we can receive guidance, peace, and clarity.
5. How’s Your Church Attendance?
It’s amazing how much our church attendance plays a significant role in our relationship with God. Attending church isn’t about fulfilling an obligation. It’s about gathering with others to worship, grow and serve. Church is a place where we can experience God’s presence in a community. It’s also a space where we can be encouraged and held accountable on our spiritual walk.
When we’re in church regularly, we’re creating opportunities to encounter God’s presence in a powerful way. Being part of the church community allows us the opportunity to stay rooted in our faith, experience new ways to grow, and have a way to contribute through service. Whether it’s volunteering, joining a small group, or simply attending, being involved keeps us connected to God and others.
6. What’s Causing Distractions?
If you’re like us, your phone is constantly pinging, and there’s always something new to check online. In fact, research shows that people check their phones around 80 times a day. That’s a lot of potential distractions!
While there’s nothing wrong with using social media and technology, it’s important to evaluate how much time we’re dedicating to it, versus how much time we’re dedicating to God. Are we spending more time scrolling than we are connecting with Him?
To combat distractions, try creating intentional moments to unplug and focus solely on God. Even just stepping away from the phone or TV for a few minutes to pray or meditate can help us reconnect with Him. It’s in that stillness we often find that God has been waiting to speak to us all along.
